Olympus Mju Tough 8000 Digital Camera

olympus090109d.jpgOlympus Imaging Corporation is pleased to announce the upcoming release of the new Mju Tough 8000 digital compact camera. The latest addition to the best selling Tough series is waterproof to a depth of 10 metres, shockproof to two metres and crushproof to 100kg. For reliable shooting on the go, the Mju Tough 8000 also incorporates a shockproof-compatible Dual Shakeproof CCD-shift image stabilisation function, ideal for those active moments where the photographer has an unsteady hand. The Mju Tough 8000 is scheduled for release in Australia on March 2, 2009 and is available in silver and black. Pricing is yet to be announced.

The top-of-the-line Mju Tough 8000, is the eighth Tough model to be released to the Australian market and is built to absorb all the punishment the world can throw at it. From the tranquil to the turbulent, this extraordinarily rugged camera is as tough as they come. Better yet, Olympus has been able to successfully incorporate a Dual Shakeproof CCD-shift image stabilisation mechanism into the camera, a feature previously thought to be technically impossible in a shockproof camera. This has been combined with the high-sensitivity shooting inherited from the Mju Tough 1030SW to create the Dual Shakeproof Image Stabilisation function, which allows active photographers to enjoy shooting without having to worry about camera shake even in difficult outdoor conditions or amongst underwater swells.

In addition to the conventional atmospheric pressure sensor, or manometer that indicated how deep the photographer was underwater, a new underwater detection sensor has been introduced to detect when the camera is immersed in water. Upon immersion, the camera automatically adjusts the brightness of its LCD and displays underwater scene modes ahead to make underwater shooting quick, easy and convenient.

Essential shooting performance is supported by a wide-angle 28mm5 zoom lens with 3.6X optical zoom, ideal for underwater shooting when the angle of view is narrow, as well as for photographing wide landscapes or a group of people in a restricted space. High quality images are assured by the high-definition 12-megapixel CCD6 and proprietary Olympus TruePic III image processing engine. The new 2.7 inch HyperCrystal III LCD monitor features high brightness of 1000 cd/m2. offering twice the brightness of a conventional LCD monitor7, a wide 160-degree viewing angle, and an anti-reflection coating. Whether it's the brilliant glare reflecting from the snow on a ski hill or the darkness under water, this LCD monitor is always clear and easy to view, making it easy to compose shots in any kind of light.

Waterproof, shockproof, crushproof and snowproof for use in any environment
Flagship of the Mju Tough Series, the Mju Tough 8000 is as tough as they come. Waterproof to a depth of 10 metres and shockproof construction capable of withstanding a fall up to two metres  or a load of up to 100 kg, the Mju Tough 8000 is resistant to temperatures as low as -10°C.

Waterproof to a depth of 10 metres
Every aspect of this camera's construction has been optimised to maximise its resistance to water pressure, enhancing the overall level of waterproof performance and allowing it to be safely used for underwater shooting without underwater dive housing equipment. From diving and snorkelling to surfing and waterskiing, the Mju Tough 8000's superior waterproofing makes it the ideal choice to capture outdoor experiences.

Shockproof to heights up to two metres
The Mju Tough 8000 is strong enough to withstand drop impact from a height of two metres, thanks to its foldable optical lens unit and floating electric circuit boards. The incorporation of shock-absorbing material inside the camera, highly rigid materials in the outer finish and a shock-absorbing mechanism to protect the lens unit from impacts, improves resistance and emphasises the rugged nature of the Tough series.

Crushproof to 100kg
The body of the Mju Tough 8000 is made from surface-coated rigid stainless steel and features a zinc die-cast battery compartment. The outer finish is resistant to damage and the overall structure is able to withstand a load as high as 100 kgf, so it can easily avoid damage if it’s exposed to a heavy weight.

Low temperature resistance to -10°C
Ordinary digital cameras are not usually guaranteed to function at temperatures below 0°C, but all internal electrical components of the Mju Tough 8000 are guaranteed to operate at temperatures as low as -10°C. This assures reliable shooting performance in cold conditions.

Dual Shakeproof CCD-shift image stabilisation mechanism and high-sensitivity shooting to prevent picture blur due to camera shake and subject movement Powerful, CCD-shift image stabilisation was previously thought to be technically impossible with a shockproof camera. Olympus has overcome this hurdle through the development of a powerful Dual Shakeproof CCD-shift image stabilisation mechanism, creating an original shock resistance mechanism incorporated in the camera without increasing its size. Combining CCD-shift image stabilisation with high-sensitivity shooting, Olympus' Dual Shakeproof image stabilisation effectively prevents the image blur that can be caused by camera shake or subject movement, enabling worry-free shooting in extreme environments, whether on land or underwater.

New underwater detection sensor automatically detects when the camera is immersed underwater
In addition to the traditional altitude, atmospheric pressure and water depth display functions, delivered by the built in manometer, the Mju Tough 8000 incorporates a new underwater sensor that lets the camera know when it is immersed underwater. LCD brightness is automatically optimised for underwater conditions and the display gives underwater scene modes (Underwater Snapshot, Underwater Wide 1, Underwater Wide 2 and Underwater Macro) priority over other scene modes so that the photographer can instantly select the mode according to the subject. Together with an alarm that alerts the diver when immersion depth exceeds seven metres, this new sensor makes underwater shooting easier and safer than ever before.

2.7-inch HyperCrystal III LCD with anti-reflection coating suitable for outdoor and underwater use
With an amazing 1,000 cd/m2 brightness at twice the contrast of a conventional LCD screen12, framing the shot in the snow, at the beach, or other areas of high glare is made easier with the Mju Tough 8000. In addition, the cover protecting the LCD against water pressure has an AR (Anti-Reflection) coating on both sides to reduce the reflection created in direct sunlight. To prevent water damage, the multi-layer metallic AR coating is reinforced with a water-repelling coating, making the camera ideal for demanding outdoor activities such as skiing and snorkelling.

'Tap Control' — taking an exciting method of camera control to the flagship model
The Mju Tough 8000 benefits from the recent introduction of Tap Control, found on the Tough Smart 1050SW launched in August 2008. With a built in accelerometer, users can take a photo, and play it back simply by tapping the top or sides of the camera body, or the surface of the LCD monitor – an ideal feature for use when wearing heavy ski gloves. In addition to tapping, functions such as slideshow speed can also be controlled simply by tilting the camera, creating an entirely new sensation that increases the fun and convenience of camera ownership.

About Olympus

In Greek mythology, Mt.Olympus is the home of the twelve supreme gods and goddesses. Olympus was named after this mountain to reflect its strong aspiration to create high quality, world famous products.

"Olympus" has been used as a trademark since the time of Takachiho Seisakusho, the predecessor of Olympus Corporation.

In Japanese mythology, it is said that eight million gods and goddesses live in Takamagahara, the peak of Mt.Takachiho. The name "Olympus" was selected as the trademark because Mt.Olympus, like Mt.Takachiho, was the home of gods and goddesses. This trademark is also imbued with the aspiration of Olympus to illuminate the world with its optical devices, just like Takamagahara brought light to the world.

Takachiho Seisakusho was renamed Takachiho Optical Co., Ltd. in 1942 when optical products became the mainstay of the company. In 1947, the name was changed again to Olympus Optical Co., Ltd. in an attempt to enhance its corporate image.

And in 2003, the company made a fresh start as Olympus Corporation, to show its willingness to establish a dynamic corporate brand by unifying the corporate name and the well-known brand.

In recent years, Olympus Corporation has focused on "Opto-Digital Technology" as its core competence, technological strengths that competitors cannot easily imitate, to maximize corporate value and to become one of the top optical instrument manufactures.
