CCP/Colour Factory Award |
![]() Leyla Stevens’ work was selected by the judges from more than seventy entries, presented by the newly re-opened Centre for Contemporary Photography, in association with long time supporter Colour Factory. Judges were Siri Hayes, artist; Naomi Milgrom, Chair and CEO, Sussan Group and art collector; and Phil Virgo, Director Colour Factory. Melbourne based photographic imaging and display company Colour Factory saw a need for this national award and selected CCP as the most suitable public gallery to develop the project. Leyla Stevens has been awarded an exhibition in CCP’s annual exhibition program and the Colour Factory have generously provided her with large colour exhibition prints and extensive consultation on the process. Currently studying at the Sydney College of the Arts (graduating in November 2005), Stevens writes of her series, “Pale Worlds, depicts precise moments when someone attempts to undermine the structure of the everyday. This involves theatrical performances placed within familiar urban environments. My intention is to explore the ritualistic tendencies in people, where such tendencies take them to the repressed or the absurd. This is a reaction to a loss of ritual and wonder in contemporary life.” Colour Factory is pleased to support the visual arts by sponsoring this award. “With this new award,” said Phil Virgo, “Colour Factory aims to support the photographic arts community and to inspire emerging photographers to excel. I acknowledge the ongoing support of Kodak Professional for providing exceptional products assisting artists to realise their vision.” CCP occupies a unique place within Australian contemporary arts organisations; a place where emerging photo-based artists can gain formative experience in the development and staging of exhibitions; where practicing photographers can find new audiences; and established artists can experiment with new directions. In April 2005 CCP moved to new premises refurbished by Sean Godsell Architects and now offers five exhibition spaces, as well as the Visy Education Space, CCP Books and Prints. Entry to the CCP galleries is always free.
