Ilford Indigenous Photographer |
![]() Currently on display at Tjanabi Restaurant, Lygon Street, Carlton, is a series of Quilliam exhibitions running until June 2006 feature works printed using Ilford’s state-of-the-art range of Galerie wide format products. He is also working with the Commonwealth Games Business Forum putting together a series of work that will run throughout the games in 2006. Quilliam’s local exhibitions at the Bless Your Black Art Festival, Melbourne; the Art Mob Gallery, Hobart and even Parliament House have clearly established him on the Australian scene, with international recognition closely following. His shows in Kyoto, Stockholm, New York and Berlin have placed Quilliam on the world stage, with several works being sold at auction in Sydney’s Lawson Menzies Auction House and Sotheby’s Auction House in London. Earlier this year, following his exhibition ‘Shades of Black’ at the Kluge-Ruhe Gallery in Virginia, USA, Quilliam also had the opportunity to shoot in New York for the acclaimed ‘Archetype’ magazine, and collaborate with some of America’s leading artists in Los Angeles. As an artist, Quilliam aims to expose his indigenous culture to the world with his distinctive pieces combining classic aboriginal nudes with aerial landscapes. “I want to expose the world to our culture in an accurate way,” says Quilliam. “And I’m hoping that this will open up opportunities for other Aboriginal artists to have their work exhibited overseas.” "I try to inspire young people to do what I do," says Quilliam. The Tasmanian-born photographer’s resume also boasts lecturing on Aboriginal culture at the University of Virginia – a far cry from his younger days in the Navy when his first-ever photographs were of an aircraft carrier that was about to be decommissioned. The next job was sweeping chimneys where he found himself looking at a wall of photographs in a customer's house and ended up with their photographic equipment as payment. He then traveled around Australia, taking photos for the Koori Mail at the ‘Coming of the Light’ festival in the Torres Strait, and Croc Festivals. Incorporating the origin and earth of his subjects’ home land, Quilliam tints his black-and-white nudes with ochres and dyes and uses Ilford Galerie products for creating his unique photographs. The scale and professional finish of his exhibition pieces he now credits to the products available from Ilford. “Ilford’s wide format papers and consistently reliable coatings enable me to create photographs that make an impact and truly get my message across,” the artist says. Now based in Melbourne and juggling his international commitments while putting together the next series for Tjanabi, Quilliam is often in contact with Ilford to see how new developments can be incorporated into his work. The team at Ilford Australia wish to congratulate Wayne on his successes and impressive creations using Ilford products. For Ilford inquiries, please contact or visit www.ILFORD.com |
